It seems we have come to Gesses for a specific purpose - to help the Gumuz believers grow in their knowledge of Jesus Christ and to begin reaching beyond themselves.
10 days ago, we heard that the Schwenks will not return to Gesses. They have fought well here in Gesses but it has been at a high cost - physically, spiritually and emotionally. Now they need a time to heal.
9 days ago, 23 Gumuz men and women were baptized by Gumuz elders. 8 days ago, the SIM school was peacefully handed over to the local government. 4 days ago, all the highland teachers ended their work with SIM on Friday.
We had a special supper together and praised God for all he had done here in Gesses since the school opened 6 years ago. It is indeed a new beginning. We need wisdom and much strength as we make decisions regarding SIM's work here in Gesses.
This rainy season, there will be about 14 Gumuz men bringing the gospel to preschool children through mother tongue literacy and storying. They are offering literacy and storying to adults as well. Although we are leaving Gesses this Friday for 7 weeks in Addis (where Rolf will do an intensive Amharic course), we believe that God will be using these young men to bring the good news to 12 or more villages. Our hope is that each of these villages will one day have a group of believers worshipping together.
