Our present "troubles" and language learning

It has been a challenging month of sickness in our home.  We are still functioning but with less sleep than we desire.   The recent onset of illness has been with respiratory infections.  Coughs, sore throats, ear aches, headaches and lack of sleep are the main  symptoms.   I have been determined not to allow my broken nights keep me from getting out and learning language.

Yesterday, during my informal language learning with my neighbour Yasheko, I learned the vocabulary for the all the symptoms of illness in our home.    Yasheko laughed as she shared the different words with me including “no sleep”.   Our illnesses help us identify with those around us.   Respiratory infections, malaria, eye infections are some common illnesses here.  So it may be that our present troubles are actually part of reaching the Gumuz by identifying with them.   May we embrace not only the joys of living here but also the struggles believing God has a purpose in them both.
