Sonia's 1st Birthday (November 28th)

A first birthday is a big deal in most parts of the world and so we decided to celebrate it well in Gesses.  We invited the Gumuz family that we know the best and are our closest neighbours along with several others.

I baked the cake and as is tradition in our family, Rolf decorated it.  Of course it always seems to happen late at night and since our solar lights can seem rather dim at times, a headlamp was a helpful asset.
We cooked up 2 chickens and made doro wat for our guests along with a bean stew.  15 large injera were baked for the occasion by Mesalech which can serve about 25 people.  The women arrived first and so they were served first (a rare event) and when the men arrived there was still plenty of food left.

Coffee and cake followed lunch and of course Sonia enjoyed her piece.  She was presented with several packages of biscuits and I was encouraged to take a picture of the presentation.

After the guests left, Sonia fell instantly asleep.  She seemed to realize that her presence was no longer necessary:)

  1. What a great birthday party and the cake looks wonderful also. Good job, Rolf, you might be able to have a 'second' career:) Happy belated birthday, Sonia - Grandma LOVES your smile and your dimple!
