We have been back in Gesses a few days and everyone is admitting the same thing: fear. They are afraid because of the recent murder. They want to plant their crops, but they are too afraid to leave their villages. The death of Chief Wenber’s daughter in law cries out for revenge or reconciliation but Chief Wenber is in prison. He wasn’t willing to give up the weapon his son used and so they put him in prison. His son has also been put in a prison in another town.
Today Rolf took two church leaders with him to prison in Dibate to visit Chief Wenber. Until the chief returns, peace talks cannot begin. Today, he agreed to give up the weapon which is apparently in his home here in Gesses and so we wait to see what happens next.
The Gumuz are also afraid because there has not been enough rain to plant their crops. They are afraid because they are already hungry and there is no food in the ground. Most of the Gumuz did not plant enough to sustain them through until the next harvest. They can harvest maize in early July if they plant in early May but the ground is still hard. And so people are selling their animals in exchange for grain but they are still afraid.
Our houseworker comes from a village not far from here and there are many highland believers there. A few weeks ago, a wedding took place and the couple feared there might be rain. They called on the witch doctors to chase the clouds away. Since that day, there has been no rain. This sounds like a story that cannot still exist in our time but it is very real.

Pray that the spirit of fear would be replaced with the power of the Holy Spirit so that these people might cast all their anxiety on Him knowing that He cares for them. And that they might be filled with love for one another. And that they might see God’s power and know it is more powerful than the evil around them.
Pray that as God’s people cry out for rain and forgiveness of sins, that He might send down rain from heaven showing his mercy and love even for those who do not yet know Him.
