Our three oldest children were born during the hottest months of the year in Manitoba, Canada. Ironically, here in Ethiopia, their birthdays fall during the coldest and rainiest months of the year. Birthday parties in Canada are celebrated outdoors with some sort of water activity and ice cream. Birthday parties in Ethiopia’s rainy season are likely to be indoors. So it was not surprising when it poured on Ariana’s birthday this Tuesday.
Ariana decided she wanted to roast wieners and marshmallows on her birthday so I baked some hot dog buns and Rolf got the wood ready for the fire. But just before supper, it began to pour. So, we postponed the marshmallows ( Ariana made up for the lost sugar but liberally sprinkling the cake with colorful candy sprinkles) and broiled the wieners.
Since Ariana had a “proper” birthday party in Addis, we celebrated in a quieter manner here in Gesses but it was special all the same. Applesauce birthday cake (a moist spice cake) with homemade icing and sprinkles, balloons and lots of cheering for our 6 year old!
The mother in the house can now breathe easy for a few months with the rainy season birthdays completed successfully. Enjoying birthdays in both seasons have given our children special memories attached to two different countries that are dear to them.
