It is hard to believe that it is almost November. Halloween is not a celebration practiced here though our verandah presently has a dozen pumpkins adorning it. These are not going to be carved this year. Instead they are one of the staple vegetables in our diet! The Gumuz grow pumpkins and also sell them. The going price is between 5-10 birr for a small pumpkin....i haven’t seen any really large ones.
So.....we make pumpkin stew, wat, soup, roasted pumpkin, pumpkin bread, squares, cookies, and pie. It is not as convenient as opening a can of pureed pumpkin but it is definitely tastier.
This morning, I purchased 4 pumpkins from my front door for a total of 20 birr and then someone came to sell lady finger bananas (6 for 2 birr) and last Wotak came. This time he came with several young boys carrying the Gumuz stools. They are woven with homemade rope and attached to 4 solid wooden legs. It took some bargaining to get them each for 20 birr. (We previously purchased some in town for 10 birr so the asking price was high). Since the closest market is 15km away, I am quite happy to buy things from my front door. It is also a great way to practice speaking Gumuz!
