It might seem strange to be posting something about Christmas already. Then again for some of you keen shoppers who like to avoid the crowds, it would not be strange at all.
Since some people have asked: If you want to send a package in time for Christmas, you will have to send it early-November as it takes 2-4 weeks to arrive. A team member will be in Addis at the end of November and beginning of December.
We will be going to Addis at the beginning of January for the SIM conference held every 2 years and so any late packages and all your Christmas cards will likely arrive then. The nice thing about that is that January 7th is Ethiopian Christmas so it is quite common for us to be celebrating well into the new year.
Ideas for packages: the kids would say candy, chips and gum. I would say: pudding or jello mixes, fruit snacks, granola bars, dried fruit, nuts (except peanuts which we can get here), seasoning packages, arts and crafts supplies for the kids, stickers, books or DVDs or music for kids or us, any food items that last in the mail. Putting things in ziplock bags is always a good idea.
Absolutely NO obligation to send things but just wanted to warn you that it does take time. And of course, when there is no corner store to shop at, common things are such a treat.
It is also possible for Rosenort and Steinbach friends to send something in January as someone we know is travelling to Ethiopia at that time.
Actually we are very content with what we have. It takes extra creativity to cook and bake with fewer options but we are well fed. Our children rarely mention things that they miss and when they do it is always passing. We are truly grateful. In fact, we would rather receive emails and updates than packages in the mail.
