This is my weakness. I love to bake and I love having my children bake with me but ... time is a challenge, ingredients are a challenge and little freezer space. But I am happy with I have been able to accomplish despite all the cookies that have already been eaten along the way.
The recipes that I was able to do this year include: oatmeal thumbprint cookies, gingersnaps (though Rolf couldn’t find molasses in Addis so they had to be adapted), oatmeal date cookies/squares and sugar cookies. And of course I always make 7 dozen perishky (yeast dough with fried hamburger or farmer sausage inside). No farmer sausage this year and I try not to think of all the dozens my mom has made.
Nicole did have a small jar of molasses and was able to make gingerbread houses today. The kids will decorate them today and eat them tomorrow. Nothing is made in this context just to look at! And I provided the icing sugar by grinding up cane sugar in our little grinder.
Yes, it is a homemade kind of Christmas but in the meantime our children are learning where things come from, how to create and enjoy the time put into the decorating, eating and making.
