Ariana turned five today and it was special even though we spent it in places and with people she didn't know. This morning, we had 3 tables of guests sing happy birthday to Ariana at Joel's request. He figured that the siblings couldn't give their treats to Ariana unless the birthday song was sung. Ariana was pleased.
We attended the International Evangelical Church service this morning at 9am (see picture taken out of our vehicle window).
After church, we met Pete & Blain and their son Bereket at Kaldi's (spin off of Starbucks). They serve the best coffee in town so I enjoyed a macciato (Addis special) and Kalia enjoyed a fruit drink (papaya, avocado, guava). We ordered some samosas, hamburgers & fries and an egg sandwich (which was actually a fried egg sandwich). We ended the meal with some ice cream (which is a real treat since you can't buy it easily for home use).
After our yummy food and drinks, we headed to the Neudorf home. The Neudorf family is a special family to us as they used to live in Asossa (45 minutes from Sherkole) and was the only missionary family in our area of Ethiopia. We enjoyed cake and more delicious Ethiopian coffee. Suzanne and her daughter Deborah made a special birthday cake for Ariana and we were able to sing to her again. Andreas and Suzanne's children played Dutch Blitz with our children and did well hosting them.

We ended the day with supper at an Ethiopian restaurant. We enjoyed a variety of dishes. Ariana's favorite dish is atar (yellow split pea) stew (which she calls the yellow stuff). It was really sweet when we asked the waiter to add some atar. He overheard Ariana call it the yellow stuff and when he added it to the tray of injera, he said in English, "some more yellow stuff". She fell asleep within minutes of getting into bed.....so no time to skype with anyone (sorry grandma & grandpa/oma & opa).
An awkward looking picture for some reason but it shows how we eat injera be wat. We are happy to say that even Nadia now eats injera with some enthusiasm.
