Yesterday, a fellow missionary came from Bahir Dar. He is holding some meetings in nearby towns and is staying here in Gesses. He offered to bring some food supplies for us. Yes please! We were down to potatoes and onions and pumpkins. The kids were actually counting the hours before uncle Tim would arrive.
We got several boxes of bananas, papaya, guavas, oranges, carrots, tomatoes and cabbages. The kids dove into the guavas! (There is one guava tree here in Gesses between the Schwenk house and our own but it is rare to actually pick a ripe guava from the tree. Anyone who passes by is sure to pick the ripest looking fruit they can find!)
There are a couple of lemon, papaya and mango trees but no fruit on them presently. (The lemon and mango trees haven’t yet produced any fruit.) It is amazing to me that the people are as healthy as they are without a regular supply of fruit and vegetables but fruit trees are very difficult to grow in this rocky environment.
We also received some long awaited letters and a couple of packages in the mail - the kids were dancing around they were so excited about the treats that arrived. I couldn’t hold back opening my mail either! Too bad I didn’t video the excitement.
You would only need to spend 30 seconds in Gesses or Dibate to understand why there is excitement over simple things like fruit and veggies and treats from home. And that is what makes living here so special. Nothing is taken for granted and small things bring great joy!
