Gumuz archery practice

Joel had one glance at the Gumuz boy’s bows and he was set on getting one.  A friend of ours offered to make one and another friend made the arrows.  Our children own their own bows but Joel has had to relearn how to shoot since the method is slightly different.

You pinch the arrow and pull the string back holding the arrow.  The arrow has no fletching..  The arrows are long and heavy.  They are hunting arrows with barbs on them.  The arrow tips are made by hammering a nail.  Rolf has put a large grass filled sack up in a tree since Gumuz boy mostly use their bows for hunting birds.  They stick a short corncob on the end so that the arrow doesn’t get stuck in the tree when they miss.

It is presently a hobby Joel enjoys a few minutes most days just before supper (especially since it is time he gets with his dad).
